The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

We’ve seen this before. Horses to automobiles. Switchboard operators to software. Entire categories of labor didn’t just shrink—they vanished. But something deeper happened: labor didn’t disappear, it moved up the stack. The real pattern isn’t destruction—it’s reconfiguration. To me, the question isn’t “will AI take jobs?” It’s “where does labor go next?”
